Opening Ceremonies - 1960 Olympics
The actual event was a gorgeous spectacle. The torch was carried down Papoose Peak by US Gold Medal winner, Andrea Mead Lawrence. Her entrance was enhanced by the 2500 choral students and 1200 band members representing high schools from California and Nevada. Speakers include: Prentis Hale, president of the Organizing Committee, Avery Brundage, president of the International Olympic Federation, Vice President Richard Nixon, Carol Heiss, US figure skating star, and Karl Malden, actor. Thousands of multi-colored balloons were released into the clear air with booming fireworks and the dropping of many colors of parachutes.
